Failure to comply with
Road Signs / Traffic Lights
The offence
s.36 RTA 1988
Failure to Comply with
Road Signs/Traffic Lights
The sentence
Summary only offence
Maximum fine £1000
3 penalty points
Legislation
Failure to comply with road signs or traffic lights is a strict liability offence which carries the penalties listed above. It is for the person accused to prove that there was a deficiency in the sign or traffic light.
It is important to look into all the circumstances of each case as a conviction can lead to penalty points being added to your driving licence and eventually “totting up” to a driving ban. Failing to comply with road signs and traffic lights can also lead to more serious allegations such as careless driving or dangerous driving.
